Most people applying for a Canada work visa from outside Canada need one thing first: a real job offer from a Canadian employer. For most jobs, the employer must also get a document called an LMIA before you can apply. Canada calls this document a work permit, not a work visa, and the office that decides is Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Quick answer: You can qualify for a Canada work permit in 2026 if you have a genuine job offer from a Canadian employer, you can do the job, and you meet IRCC’s general rules. For most jobs your employer needs a positive LMIA first. The fee is CAD 155, plus CAD 85 for biometrics if they apply to you. Open work permits exist, but only for small, specific groups. You cannot get a general open permit from outside Canada just by paying a fee.

What “Canada Work Visa” Actually Means

Canada does not issue a separate “work visa” document. You apply for a work permit. If IRCC approves you, it sends a letter of introduction, and a border officer makes the final decision and issues your permit when you arrive. Depending on your nationality, you may also need a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization to travel.

  • Employer-specific work permit. This ties you to one employer, one job, and usually one location. It is the main route from outside Canada.
  • Open work permit. This lets you work for most employers, but only limited groups can get one, as explained below.

Who Can Apply: Basic Eligibility for Everyone

Whichever permit you apply for, IRCC checks the same basic points:

  • Have a valid passport.
  • Convince an officer that you will leave Canada when your permit ends.
  • Show enough money to support yourself, and your family if they come with you, and to return home.
  • Have no criminal record, and not be a danger to Canada’s security. IRCC may ask for a police certificate.
  • Be in good health. IRCC may ask for a medical exam with an approved panel physician.
  • Show you are qualified for the job, with education or work experience documents.
  • Use an employer not on IRCC’s list of ineligible employers.

Route 1: Employer-Specific Work Permit (The Main Route)

This is the route most readers of Asantata34 will use. The order matters: first a written job offer or signed contract from a Canadian employer, naming the job title, duties, wage, hours, and work location. Fake or vague offers are a common refusal reason, and they are the main tool of fraudsters, covered below. Then comes the employer’s step.

The LMIA, explained simply

LMIA stands for Labour Market Impact Assessment. Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) runs this check through Service Canada.

In simple words, an LMIA asks one question: is there a Canadian citizen or permanent resident ready and able to do this job? The employer usually advertises the job in Canada first and shows real efforts to hire locally. If ESDC agrees the hiring will not hurt the Canadian job market, it issues a positive LMIA.

  • The employer applies for the LMIA, not you.
  • The employer pays the LMIA processing fee. A real employer never asks the worker to pay for the LMIA or the job.
  • A positive LMIA is valid for up to 6 months. Apply for your work permit within that time.
  • Some jobs are LMIA-exempt, such as many intra-company transfers. The employer then submits the offer through IRCC’s Employer Portal and gives you an offer of employment number instead.

The pattern is similar elsewhere: our Germany Work Visa 2026 guide also starts with a job offer.

Route 2: Global Talent Stream (The Faster Route)

The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is part of the same LMIA system, built for speed:

  • Category A: innovative companies referred by a designated partner that need unique, specialised talent.
  • Category B: employers filling jobs on Canada’s global talent occupations list, mostly technology and engineering roles.

The employer still applies for an LMIA, but ESDC’s service standard for the GTS is a decision in 10 business days, met about 80% of the time. The employer must also file a Labour Market Benefits Plan showing how the hiring helps Canada’s labour market.

After a positive GTS LMIA, your side can move fast too. Under IRCC’s Global Skills Strategy, IRCC aims to process complete GTS applications in about 2 weeks. That is a target, not a promise, and missing documents take you out of the fast lane.

Route 3: Open Work Permits (Limited Groups Only)

An open work permit is not tied to one employer, which makes it attractive. But you cannot simply choose this route. You must fit a specific IRCC category, and most people applying from outside Canada do not qualify.

The best-known category is the family open work permit for spouses. These rules became stricter on 21 January 2025, and they still apply in 2026:

  • Spouses of international students qualify only if the student is in a master’s program of 16 months or longer, a doctoral program, or a select professional program.
  • Spouses of foreign workers qualify only if the worker’s job is a TEER 0 or TEER 1 occupation (management or professional jobs), or a select TEER 2 or 3 job in a shortage sector such as health care, construction, natural resources, education, sports, or the military.
  • The foreign worker must also have at least 16 months left on their work permit when the spouse applies.
  • Dependent children of foreign workers are no longer eligible for family open work permits under these rules.

TEER groups jobs by the training, education, experience, and responsibilities they need; TEER 0 and 1 are the highest-skill groups. Other open permit categories exist, such as the post-graduation work permit for graduates of eligible Canadian schools, but they are narrow. If an agent says anyone in the UAE can get one for a fee, that is false.

Fees You Will Pay

These are IRCC’s official fees in Canadian dollars. You pay them online when you submit your application.

FeeAmount (CAD)Who pays / notes
Work permit (including extensions), per person155You, the applicant
Open work permit holder fee (extra)100Only for open work permits; total 255
Biometrics, per person85Only if IRCC requires biometrics; family maximum 170
LMIA processing feePaid by the employerThe employer applies and pays; never the worker

Government fees are the same worldwide, and no agent can charge a “special” government fee.

Applying from the UAE: Step by Step

  1. Check your route. Decide whether you apply with an LMIA, an LMIA-exempt offer, or a specific open permit category.
  2. Secure the job offer. Get a written offer or signed contract with clear title, wage, duties, and location.
  3. Wait for the employer’s step. For most jobs, the employer gets the positive LMIA and sends you the decision letter and contract. For LMIA-exempt jobs, you get an offer of employment number instead.
  4. Apply online through your IRCC account. Answer the eligibility questions to get your personal document checklist, then upload your passport, job documents, qualifications, and proof of funds.
  5. Pay the fees online. CAD 155 for the work permit, plus CAD 85 for biometrics if asked. Open permit applicants also pay the CAD 100 holder fee.
  6. Give biometrics. If IRCC requires them, you get an instruction letter. Book a free appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) — there are VACs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, run for IRCC by VFS Global.
  7. Complete any medical exam with an IRCC panel physician, if your checklist requires one.
  8. Wait for the decision. If approved, you receive a letter of introduction. Bring it with your passport; the border officer issues your actual permit on arrival.

Common Mistakes and Refusal Reasons

  • Applying without a job offer. For the main route, no offer means no permit.
  • Paying for a job or an LMIA. Real employers do not sell jobs. Charging a worker for an offer or an LMIA is a classic scam sign.
  • Fake or altered documents. IRCC trains officers to detect them. False information can bring a refusal. If IRCC treats it as misrepresentation, you can also be barred from Canada for 5 years.
  • Weak proof you will leave, or mismatched details. Officers must be satisfied you will respect your permit dates, and your contract, LMIA letter, and forms must agree on the job, wage, and location. Thin ties or past overstays hurt your file.
  • Incomplete applications. Missing documents end fast processing and can end the application. Use your generated checklist only.
  • Assuming your spouse automatically qualifies. After the January 2025 changes, many spouses no longer qualify. Check the TEER and 16-month rules first.

Warning: Job and Visa Fraud

Read this first. IRCC’s own fraud guidance is blunt: no one can guarantee you a job or a visa to Canada. Only Canadian immigration officers can decide an application, and Canada does not sell jobs.

  • A “guaranteed visa” promised without a real employer and interview.
  • Being asked to pay for a job offer, an LMIA, or a “sponsorship letter.”
  • Payment requested into a personal bank account or a private money transfer service.
  • A salary far too high for the job, or an offer letter with no real company details.
  • Documents or payments requested through social media messages.
  • An “agent” who cannot show authorisation. Only licensed Canadian immigration lawyers and registered consultants may legally charge for immigration advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a Canada work permit without a job offer?

For the main employer-specific route, no. A job offer is the base of the application. Open work permits are the only permits without one, and they are limited to specific categories such as qualifying spouses.

How much does a Canada work visa cost in 2026?

The fee is CAD 155 per person. If IRCC requires biometrics, add CAD 85. An open work permit costs CAD 255 in total, because it adds the CAD 100 holder fee. Your employer pays the LMIA fee, not you.

What is an LMIA in simple words?

It is a government check of the employer’s hiring. ESDC confirms the employer tried to hire in Canada and that no available Canadian worker was passed over. A positive LMIA is valid for up to 6 months.

Can my spouse work in Canada too?

Only in narrower cases since 21 January 2025. Your spouse may qualify if your job is TEER 0 or 1, or a listed TEER 2 or 3 job in a shortage sector, and you have at least 16 months left on your permit. Many spouses who qualified before 2025 no longer do, so check the current rules on canada.ca first.

How long will my application from the UAE take?

It depends on the permit type, the visa office, and how complete your file is, so IRCC gives no single fixed time. Use IRCC’s official processing times tool on canada.ca, select work permit and the United Arab Emirates, and check before planning resignation dates or flights. GTS cases are the exception: ESDC targets 10 business days for the LMIA, and IRCC aims for about 2 weeks on complete GTS applications.

Conclusion

For 2026, eligibility rests on three things: a genuine job offer, an employer who completes the LMIA or exemption step, and an applicant who meets IRCC’s rules on funds, health, background, and intent to leave. The Global Talent Stream makes the same system faster for in-demand skilled roles, while open work permits stay narrow after the January 2025 spouse rules. Start on canada.ca, keep your documents consistent, and never pay anyone who promises a guaranteed visa. Still comparing countries?
