Germany Work Visa 2026: Requirements and How to Apply

Germany has several work routes for skilled people from outside the European Union. The right one depends on two points: do you already have a German job offer, and is your qualification recognised? Most UAE residents apply for a national visa before travel, then complete the residence permit after arrival.

Quick answer: With a strong job offer and a recognised degree, check the EU Blue Card first. With a job offer and a recognised degree or vocational qualification, the skilled worker permit may fit. With no job offer, the Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) lets qualified people enter Germany for up to one year to look for work, if they meet the points and money rules.

The main routes at a glance

RouteJob offer?Main requirementKey 2026 figure
EU Blue CardYesRecognised degree or comparable tertiary qualification; job matches the qualificationSalary at least €50,700, or €45,934.20 in set cases

These are long-stay routes. A short-stay Schengen visa does not allow you to take a job in Germany. For visit rules, see Schengen visa requirements for UAE residents.

EU Blue Card: a well-paid job that matches your degree

The Blue Card is often the first route to check for graduates with a firm job offer. Your foreign degree must be comparable to a German degree. A tertiary qualification that took at least three years can also count in some cases. The job must match your qualification and last at least six months.

Salary thresholds for 2026

  • Standard: at least €50,700 gross per year.
  • Lower: at least €45,934.20 gross per year for shortage occupations, for people who finished their last qualification less than three years ago, and for set IT cases. Federal Employment Agency approval is needed in these cases.

Germany publishes new Blue Card thresholds every year. Always check your contract salary against the threshold for the year you apply.

The shortage list covers many managers, academic STEM professionals, doctors, dentists, pharmacists, vets, teachers, and academic or comparable nursing and midwifery professionals. The job title alone is not enough; your duties, qualification, and salary all matter.

Some IT professionals without a formal degree can also qualify. They need an IT job offer at the lower threshold, plus three years of IT work in the last seven years at a level that fits the job.

Skilled worker permit: qualified employment

This permit, under Sections 18a or 18b of the Residence Act, covers people with an academic degree or qualified vocational training.

You need a job offer from a German employer, and the post must be qualified work. Helper tasks are not enough. Your qualification must be recognised in Germany, or your degree must be comparable to a German one. The job does not always have to be in the same field as your qualification.

If the profession is regulated, such as many health jobs, you need a licence to practise or the right recognition step for that profession.

As a rule, the Federal Employment Agency must approve the job. It checks salary, working hours, and other terms against German standards. There is no single salary figure for all skilled worker jobs, but poor or unclear terms can still cause refusal.

If you are over 45 and coming to work in Germany for the first time, a special rule applies. For 2026, the job must pay at least €55,770 gross per year, unless you can show adequate pension cover.

The permit runs for a maximum of four years. A shorter contract is normally matched with a permit for the contract period plus six months.

Chancenkarte: enter Germany to look for work

The Chancenkarte, or Opportunity Card, is for people who do not yet have a job offer. It is issued for up to one year. You may work part-time for up to 20 hours a week while you search. You may also do a job trial for up to two weeks with one employer.

If your qualification is fully recognised

If your foreign degree or vocational qualification is fully recognised in Germany, you can apply without the points test. For this route, the official portal says you do not need to prove language skills. German still helps a lot in a real job search.

If you need points: reach at least 6

You still need a real qualification, recognised in the country where you earned it. A vocational qualification must have taken at least two years. You also need German at A1 level or English at B2 level before points are counted.

  • Partial recognition of your qualification: 4 points.
  • Experience linked to your qualification: 2 points for two years in the last five years; 3 points for five years in the last seven years.
  • German above A1: A2 = 1 point, B1 = 2 points, B2 or above = 3 points.
  • English at C1 or native level: 1 extra point.
  • Age: 2 points if you are under 35; 1 point if you are 35 to 40.
  • Qualification in a shortage occupation: 1 point.
  • Legal stay in Germany of at least six months in the last five years: 1 point. Tourist stays do not count.
  • A partner who also meets the card rules: 1 point.

Money you must show

For 2026, the official amount is at least €1,091 net per month. For a full year, that is €13,092 in a blocked account. A formal declaration of commitment from a person in Germany may be accepted instead. This money proves you can support yourself. It is not a fee and it is not paid to the German government.

Recognition of UAE degrees

A UAE degree is not accepted just because the university is well known. Germany checks the institution and the qualification. Start with the official anabin database, the main portal for foreign university qualifications.

If anabin does not give a clear positive result, you may need a Statement of Comparability from the ZAB, the Central Office for Foreign Education. Vocational qualifications may need a formal recognition step or an official digital statement.

Start early. A job offer is hard to use if your qualification is unclear. Regulated workers must also check the licence rules for their exact profession.

Language and family

German is not always a legal must. The Blue Card has no general German level for the first application, and the skilled worker route turns mainly on the job, the qualification, and any licence. Many employers still ask for German.

The Chancenkarte points route is stricter: German A1 or English B2 is needed before points count.

Blue Card holders and skilled workers can bring close family members under the family reunification rules. Each family member has a separate application and checks. Read the official family guidance for your permit type before you plan dates.

How to apply from the UAE

The German mission guidance for the UAE says applicants must be habitually resident in the UAE. For the Consulate General in Dubai, your Emirates ID or UAE residence permit should have been issued at least six months before you apply.

Many work categories can be started online through the Consular Services Portal (Auslandsportal) at digital.diplo.de. The UAE mission lists online applications for the Opportunity Card, the EU Blue Card, work as an academic, work as a skilled worker with professional training, work based on experience, and other long-stay categories.

  1. Choose your route: Blue Card, skilled worker permit, or Chancenkarte.
  2. Check your qualification in anabin. Apply for ZAB or other recognition help if the result is unclear.
  3. For Blue Card and skilled worker cases, secure the job offer or contract. Check the salary against the rule for your route and year.
  4. For the Chancenkarte, count your points with documents, prepare language proof, and open the blocked account or arrange other accepted proof of funds.
  5. Create an account on digital.diplo.de if your category is offered online. Complete the forms and upload clear copies of the documents your category asks for.
  6. Answer the portal pre-check. If the mission asks for changes or extra papers, send the exact documents requested.
  7. Attend your in-person appointment when invited. Bring originals, give fingerprints and a photo, and pay the fee.
  8. Pay the national visa fee: €75 for adults and €37.50 for children under 18, paid in AED.
  9. Wait for the decision and collect your passport when the mission contacts you. UAE guidance says applications can take up to 12 weeks or longer, depending on the case.
  10. After arrival, register your address and complete your residence permit steps with the local foreigners authority. Follow the dates on your visa.

If your category is not offered online, follow the mission page for that category. Do not book in the wrong category; the UAE mission warns such appointments are not valid.

Common mistakes and reasons for delay or refusal

  • Salary too low. A Blue Card offer below the threshold for the year fails, even if the job title sounds senior.
  • Weak degree check. A certificate alone may not be enough if anabin or ZAB does not support it.
  • Job is not qualified. Helper work does not become qualified work because the contract uses a better title.
  • Points without proof. Experience, language skill, and past stays in Germany need documents.
  • Blocked account too small. Using a student amount or an old amount can harm a Chancenkarte case.
  • Wrong place of application. Check the Emirates ID rule if you live in the UAE; elsewhere, your local mission may be responsible.
  • Missing or unclear documents. Upload clear copies and bring originals.
  • Visit visa treated as a work route. A Schengen visit visa is for short stays, not for taking a job.

FAQ

Can I apply without a job offer?

Yes, through the Chancenkarte, with a fully recognised qualification or at least 6 points plus basic language proof and funds. The Blue Card and skilled worker permit both need a job offer.

What is the EU Blue Card salary for 2026?

The standard threshold is €50,700 gross per year. The lower threshold is €45,934.20 for shortage occupations, set recent-graduate cases, and some IT applicants.

How much money do I need for the Chancenkarte?

For 2026, at least €1,091 net per month: €13,092 for twelve months in a blocked account, unless you use another accepted proof, such as a formal declaration of commitment.

Do I need German for a work visa?

Not for every route. The Blue Card has no general German level at the first stage. The Chancenkarte points route needs German A1 or English B2. A regulated job may still need German for the licence.

How long does the visa take from the UAE?

The German mission in the UAE says applications can take up to 12 weeks. Apply early, and do not book non-refundable travel before the visa is issued.

Can my family join me?

In many skilled cases, yes, under family reunification rules. Each person has separate forms and checks, so plan early.

Conclusion

Start with what you can prove: qualification, job offer, salary, and funds. Strong offer and salary: check the Blue Card first. Qualified job below that salary line: the skilled worker permit may fit. No offer: use the Chancenkarte only when the points and money are truly in place.
