If you live in the UAE and hold a passport that needs a visa for Europe, you must get a Schengen visa before you travel. One visa lets you visit 29 European countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This guide explains who needs one, which documents to prepare, what it costs, and how to apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

Quick answer: UAE citizens do not need a Schengen visa for short trips. UAE residents with other passports usually do, based on their nationality. You apply to the country that is your main destination, through a visa centre such as VFS Global or BLS in the UAE. The fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11. You need a valid passport, UAE residence proof, travel medical insurance of at least €30,000, bookings, and proof of money and work. The standard decision time is 15 calendar days.

Who Needs a Schengen Visa From the UAE?

Your passport decides this, not your address.

UAE Citizens

UAE passport holders are visa-exempt for short Schengen stays. The UAE sits on the EU list of countries whose citizens do not need a short-stay visa. You can travel for tourism, business meetings, or family visits for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

This exemption covers short trips only. It does not let you live, work, or study long term in Europe. Those plans need a national long-stay visa or residence permit from the country itself. If you plan to settle in Spain, read our Spain Golden Visa guide to see how long-stay routes differ.

UAE Residents With Other Passports

If you hold a passport from a country on the EU visa-required list, you need a Schengen visa before you fly. This applies to many expat residents in the UAE, such as Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Filipino, and Egyptian passport holders, among others.

Your UAE residence visa still matters. It proves you live legally in the UAE, so you can apply here instead of in your home country. Most consulates in the UAE ask that it stays valid for at least three months after your return date. Wording differs by consulate, so check your destination’s checklist first.

Some residents hold passports that are also visa-exempt, such as British or American passports. If your nationality is exempt, you do not apply for a visa. Check the official EU list for your passport first.

Which Country Should You Apply To?

You apply to one country only, even if your trip covers several:

  • Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. That is your main destination.
  • If you split your nights equally, apply to the country you enter first.
  • If you visit only one country, apply to that country.

Most consulates in the UAE do not take walk-in files. They use visa application centres. VFS Global handles many countries in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and BLS International handles Spain. Some countries use other centres, and France asks you to complete the form on its France-Visas portal first.

Apply at the centre for your destination, not the centre with the shortest queue. If Spain is your main stop, our Spain tourist visa requirements guide covers that route in detail.

Documents You Need

Every consulate publishes its own checklist, and small details can differ. The core list below follows the EU Visa Code and UAE checklists.

DocumentWhat Is Required
Application formCompleted and signed Schengen visa form. Some countries ask you to fill it online first, then print and sign it.
PassportValid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area. It must have at least 2 blank pages and be issued within the last 10 years.
PhotosRecent colour passport photos on a light background, taken to Schengen photo rules.
UAE residence visa and Emirates IDCopies that prove you live legally in the UAE. Most UAE checklists ask for residence validity of at least 3 months beyond your return.
Travel medical insuranceCover of at least €30,000 for the whole trip and the whole Schengen area. It must cover emergency care, hospital treatment, and return home for medical reasons or death.
Flight bookingA round-trip reservation that shows your entry and exit dates. A reservation is normally enough at this stage.
Hotel bookings or host proofBookings for every night, or an invitation and proof of address if you stay with family or friends.
Proof of moneyRecent bank statements, usually for the last 3 to 6 months as the checklist states. They should show regular income and enough balance for the trip.
Proof of work and tiesAn employer No Objection Certificate (NOC) with your job, salary, and approved leave dates. Business owners usually show a trade licence. Students show enrolment proof.
Cover letter and itineraryA short letter stating your purpose, dates, cities, and how you will pay.

Carry originals and copies to your appointment. The officer can ask for extra documents, such as salary slips or old passports with past visas. A short-stay visa does not allow you to take a job in Europe. Work needs a national work visa, as explained in our Germany work visa guide.

Child visa fee€45 for children aged 6 to 11

PaymentPaid when you submit the file, in local currency (AED in the UAE) at the rate the consulate uses.
Decision time15 calendar days as standard. It can extend to 45 days if checks, extra documents, or an interview are needed.
When to applyUp to 6 months before your trip, and no later than 15 days before you travel.

The visa fee is not returned if your application is refused.

How to Apply, Step by Step

  1. Work out your main destination using the most-nights rule above.
  2. Open that country’s official checklist for applicants in the UAE. Note any local points, such as residence validity or statement periods.
  3. Fill in the application form. Use the country’s portal if it has one, such as France-Visas for France.
  4. Buy travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 of cover for your full travel dates.
  5. Collect your bookings, bank statements, NOC, and other documents in checklist order.
  6. Book an appointment at the right visa centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Slots fill fast in peak season, so book early.
  7. Attend in person. Submit your file, pay the fees, and give your fingerprints and photo.
  8. Track your file if the centre offers tracking, and wait for the decision.
  9. Collect your passport, or receive it by courier if you chose that service. Check the visa sticker dates and details at once.

Fingerprints are stored in the Visa Information System. If yours were taken in the last 59 months, you may not need to give them again. Children under 12 do not give fingerprints.

Multiple-Entry Visas and the Cascade Rule

A multiple-entry visa lets you enter and leave many times while it is valid. The 90-in-180-days limit still applies to every stay.

The Visa Code uses a step system, often called the cascade. It rewards a clean travel history:

  • If you held and lawfully used 3 Schengen visas in the previous 2 years, you can get a 1-year multiple-entry visa.
  • If you then held and lawfully used that 1-year visa in the previous 2 years, you can get a 2-year multiple-entry visa.
  • If you then held and lawfully used a 2-year visa in the previous 3 years, you can get a 5-year multiple-entry visa.

Lawfully used means you travelled on the visa and followed its dates and limits. A shorter visa is still possible if the consulate has doubts.

EES and ETIAS: Two Systems to Know

EES, the New Border System

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is the EU’s digital border system for non-EU travellers. It records your name, passport data, fingerprints, facial image, and entry and exit dates, replacing passport stamps.

EES started in stages on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational on 10 April 2026, the European Commission states. You do not apply for it. It happens at the border.

ETIAS, Not Yet Live

ETIAS is a planned online travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers only. It is not a visa. If you need a Schengen visa, ETIAS does not apply to you.

ETIAS is not in operation yet, and no applications are being collected. The EU says it will announce the start date several months before launch. Earlier plans pointed to late 2026, but that target no longer stands on the official site. The EU has set the planned fee at €20 for most adults.

Be careful with websites that offer to sell you an ETIAS today. Since the system is not live, no site can issue a real one.

Common Mistakes and Refusal Reasons

  • Applying to the wrong country. Your main destination decides where you apply, not the easiest appointment.
  • Weak proof of money. Low balances, sudden large deposits with no source, or missing statements raise doubts.
  • Insurance that falls short. Cover below €30,000, wrong dates, or cover for only one country does not meet the rule.
  • Bookings that do not match. Flight, hotel, and leave dates should tell one clear story.
  • Short UAE residence validity. A residence visa that expires soon after your return can lead to a refusal at the counter or later.
  • Unclear purpose or weak ties. A missing NOC or vague plan makes it harder to show you will leave on time.
  • Applying too late. Appointment waits are separate from the 15-day decision time. Peak season can add weeks before you even submit.

A refusal letter states the reasons in writing. You can appeal to the consulate that refused you, within the time limit in the letter. A fresh application with stronger documents is also an option. Neither path promises a different result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do UAE citizens need a Schengen visa?

No. UAE passport holders are exempt for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. They will need ETIAS only after the EU announces its start, since ETIAS is not live yet.

I live in Dubai on an Indian passport. Can I apply in the UAE?

Yes, if you hold a valid UAE residence visa. You apply here because you live in the UAE legally.

How much bank balance do I need?

There is no single EU-wide fixed amount. Each country sets its own daily means guide, and officers judge your full file. Regular income, steady statements, and funds that match your trip cost matter more than one large deposit.

Can I visit other Schengen countries on one visa?

Yes. A Schengen visa allows travel across the area during its validity. Still, travel mainly as you stated in your application.

How early should I apply from the UAE?

Start 6 to 8 weeks ahead in busy months. That leaves room for appointment waits plus the 15-day decision time.

Is the visa fee refunded if I am refused?

No. The fee pays for processing your application, not for the result. Visa centre service fees are also normally non-refundable.

Conclusion

Your passport decides if you need a visa, and your main destination decides where you apply. Prepare the standard documents, meet the €30,000 insurance rule, and apply early. Asantata34 will update this guide when official rules change.
